What Oil Supplement Should I Give My Dog for Itching & Flaking Skin?

What Oil Supplement Should I Give My Dog for Itching & Flaking Skin?

Peteducation.com reports that food allergies account for 20 percent of allergies in pets that lead to itching and skin problems. Other causes may be environmental or may even be from natural bacteria that a dog carries on its skin. Many pet owners have been taught that a dog’s food will supply all the nutrients it needs to be healthy and live a long life. Unfortunately, many commercial dog foods contain wheat and soy, two of the most common ingredients to which dogs are allergic. Supplementing a dog’s diet with the fatty acids found in fish oil relieves allergy symptoms.

What are Fatty Acids?

Fatty acids are types of polyunsaturated fats, according to PetEducation.com. The two main types important for dogs include omega-6 and omega-3 acids. Dogs produce some of the other necessary fatty acids themselves, but these essential fatty acids must come from their diet. Dogs need a proper ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids for healthy skin and coat. Most commercial pet foods contain a disproportionate amount of omega-6 acids.

Types

Two acids in particular, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexanoic acid) are extremely important and found in marine fish and certain plants. Fish oil—commonly sardine or salmon oil—comes in gel caps and as an oil, which can easily supplement a dog’s diet. The oil is easier to add to a dog’s food. High-quality fish oil for humans is also suitable for animals, but if your dog is picky, choose a fish oil that is formulated for dogs. Those formulations may have an added flavor that dogs enjoy.

Benefits

Supplementing a dog’s diet with the fatty acids found in fish oil diminishes its itching and flaking skin, but will take at least six weeks to see a change. Most dogs get relief from symptoms sooner than that. Fatty acids also help with yeast infections of the skin, as well.

Use of Oils

Add fish oil to your dog’s food every day. Follow the dosage directions on the bottle, but don’t be afraid to give your dog more than the recommended dosage if its allergies are very serious. In addition, many dosage recommendations are too low for results, according to PetCareNaturally.com. To cure medical problems, a dog should be consuming 1,500 to 2,000 mg per day of EPA and DHA ,and all dogs should be consuming a daily supplement of 1,000 mg to maintain healthy skin and coat.

Alternatives

Many plant-derived sources of fatty acids are equally as potent as fish oil. These include flax meal or oil, pumpkin seed oil, sunflower or safflower oil. It is also okay to feed your dog sardines instead of the oil, which may have benefits over fish oil gel capsules.

Use Fish Oil For Dogs For A Healthy Skin And Coat

Your dog deserves the best and you can fulfill his wish by treating him well and offering him whatever he needs. Your dog not only needs food, he also needs your love together with supplements for dogs to keep him healthy. Fatty acids are the most widely used pet supplements to treat both dogs and cats. You can easily find fatty acids, which are divided into the omega 3 and omega 6 type, in the marketplace. Experts have shown that fatty acids can substitute some drugs when treating inflammation.

Fish oil is a supplement that has fatty acids in it and that is why it is used for its positive effects in helping people and pets with certain ailments. Fish oil supplements have only one minor inconvenience; a slight fish scent on the breath and/or the skin. If you give your dog the recommended dosage, your dog will not bleed. To prevent the scent of fish odor from lingering, you should definitely lower the dosage. Some pet owners fear that fish oil supplements may cause overweight dogs to encounter health problems. This however, is unfounded because fish oil supplements are perfectly safe to be taken by any dieting dog.

If your dog is suffering from allergies, arthritis, kidney disease, heart disease or cancer, you should think about using Fish oil for dogs. You can also use it in case of depression. It is also recommended if your dog has allergic skin disease. You can find it packaged as gel caps or liquid for easy digestion.A fish oil for dogs supplement contains a special combination of natural nutrients, known for their positive health effects on a dog’s skin and coat.It is very important to protect your dog`s skin because it is the largest organ of the body. Pet owners should buy fish oil for dogs because it helps a dog’s skin, its most important organ, remain healthy. It also protects a dog’s body by regulating its body temperature.

Once your dog grows old, he will encounter health problems that will seriously affect his bones, muscles, and ultimately, his wellbeing. As a dog owner, you should be aware that if you feed your dog only red meat, he will be more likely to develop an arthritic condition and unless you do not give him certain nutrients like Glucosamine for dogs, you will not be able to keep his bones and joints healthy. Glucosamine is very important, because it can be found in the cartilage and synovial fluid and having a glucosamine deficit can cause your dog to have serious pain.

Veterinarians agree that oral glucosamine is absorbed directly into the joint tissues because it has anti-inflammatory properties, which means that is also good for osteo-arthritic conditions. Pet owners should definitely consider introducing Glucosamine supplements to their dogs alimentation if they see their dog having problems moving and/or if they have joint pain. Your dog will not be harmed when taking Glucosamine for dogs. Rather, your dog will enjoy the healthy life he deserves in his old age.Experts agree that natural remedies have been used for hundreds years to support both human and animal health.

Dog Dandruff---Dog Has Flaky Skin

One question we frequently get is about flaky skin or dog dandruff. I know when my Ariel was young she used to get it, too. I went to the veterinarian at the time and received very little guidance. That was over 10 years ago and we have made a lot of progress in terms of our understanding of skin conditions, flaky skin and doggie dandruff. Here are some factors that contribute:

1) Dry, flaking skin–when a dog’s skin is flaking, many times pet owners think the dog needs topical lotions or creams. While sure, using a topical cream rinse can help temporarily, that is not a permanent answer. The problem needs to be resolved internally. The dog’s coat is dry because the diet does not contain enough essential fatty acids e.g. Omega 3 essential oils. What is a great source of this? Well—Amazing Omegas. Amazing Omegas contain the purest, most potent fish oil available. Because it is so pure, it is highly bioavailable to your dog and cat. What does bioavailable mean? It means that your pet’s body is able to use it. We have had countless examples at the clinic where pet owners are already using another brand of fish oil and yet, the pet continues to have dull coat or flaky skin. This is most likely due to the fact that the oil is not a high enough quality or they are not using enough. Buyer beware–there is huge variation in fish oils….

As an interesting factoid–Did you know that humans can have dry skin, hair and DRY EYE due to lack of essential fatty acids. It is incredible that sometimes dry eye can be due to a lack of omegas. All of the omegas featured on Askariel.com, including Amazing Omegas are manufactured for pets and people, so you and your pet can share a bottle together!

2) Parasites–sometimes dry flaking skin can be due to parasites. Be sure to have your veterinarian do a skin scraping.

3) Dog Yeast–sometimes dogs have a yeast condition, that along with the flaking, can make them have an odor as well. Yeast thrives especially in moist places such as the ears and groin. A dog can be itching the ears and not have an infection, in part because there may be a slight overgrowth of yeast. Try using Myco-zyme yeast package which includes Amazing Omegas. This will help target the yeast, provide immune support and include valuable essential fatty acids as well.

4) Dog Allergies–Dogs can have food allergies and one of the ways it manifests itself is through the skin. If your dog has dandruff, smelly skin, dry coat, itching….these are all signs that most likely it is due to the food you are feeding. Switch to a low carbohydrate, hypoallergenic food. Be sure to avoid key allergens such as chicken, grains, peanut butter and dog biscuits (contains wheat). Click here to schedule a consultation with our nutritionist, Susan Davis.

Dog Dandruff and Flaking Skin: Fish Oil and Diet Changes Will Help

Dog dandruff is often accompanied by itching and skin dryness.  Some dogs can have red bumps and an odor as well.  Sometimes when you touch a dog with dog dandruff, a white film is on your hands afterwards.  If your dog has dandruff, a good first step would be to take your dog to the veterinarian to rule out parasites, skin disease, hypothyroidism and other potential health conditions.  Your veterinarian may need to do a skin scraping to determine what is wrong.

Many times, dogs who have flakey skin and dandruff have food and environmental allergies.  While topical rinses may help somewhat, you need to help your dog from the inside out.  The first step is to give your dog a highly therapeutic fish oil.  Fish oil contains essential fatty acids called Omega 3s.  There are MANY fish oil products for pets available but unfortunately most do not contain bioavailable Omega 3s and so pet owners may use them without success.  So many caring pet owners will tell us how they tried a store bought fish oil cap with no results.  The important word here is “bioavailable”—what that means is that it is a fish oil that is naturally processed, free of heavy metals and contaminants and most importantly, in a form that your dog’s body can use.  If it is not bioavailable, the oil literally goes in one end and out the other.  To conquer dog dandruff and flaking skin, you have to use a fish oil that contains a high level of omega 3 fatty acids that your dog can absorb and utilize.

Fish Oils for Dogs for Shiny Coat and Healthy Skin

One of the most common comments people make when first meeting Rocco is how “soft he is”. Obviously, as a husky, he has a very thick coat, but it wasn’t always soft. When we first adopted him, his coat had the quality of a bristle brush – it felt rough, brittle and oily. Rocco came to us a with a number of health problems. Chronic diarrhea due to food allergies needed the most urgent attention – he was barely a yearling and his growth and health were already compromised by nutritional deficiencies. The deficiencies most clearly manifested in his compromised immune system, poor coat and skin quality, dull eyes and low energy.

We spent months trying to figure out a diet that would calm his allergies and provide him with high quality nutrition. I have written about our feeding woes in a previous post. Over a two-year period, we experimented with a few different brands before finding one that suited Rocco’s needs best. The common theme with all the brands we had tried was that the primary protein was fish based. That’s when we saw the amazing change in Rocco’s coat quality – it was soft, shiny and oh so fluffy!

The current food we are using right now is based on bison protein. It is an excellent quality food, but does not provide Rocco with the same amount of fatty acids as the fish based products. Which is why I’ve been looking into fish oils for dogs to supplement his diet and make sure he gets enough omega-3 and omega-6 in his diet.

There are many benefits to using fish oil: better joint lubrication, improved immune system, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties and of course improved skin and coat.

I notice that summer is especially hard on Rocco’s skin and coat. The sun, frequent swims in the ocean, many allergens all lead to a more sensitive and itchy skin. Often baths are a doubled edge sword, even though they remove the salt and dirt, they dry out the skin further. It’s a complaint I often hear from my clients and other dog owners I meet at the beach. It’s been my experience that supplementing with vegetable and fish oils helps to relieve dogs skin problems.

There are many reasons why your dog may be experiencing skin problems, so it is always important to consult with your vet for a diagnosis and for proper dosage of any supplement appropriate for your dog.
