Commonly Asked Questions about Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Fish Oil Supplements:
Q. Why does my veterinarian recommend a specific fish oil supplement for my pet? Why canât I use just any over-the-counter fish oil supplement?
A. Not all Fish Oil Supplements are created equal. Unfortunately, the FDA does not regulate any nutritional supplements that we use for us or our pets. Sadly, some over-the-counter supplements have been shown to have heavy metal contaminants, and sometimes even little to none of the listed ingredients actually in the product! Some product labels do not even tell you exactly how much EPA or DHA is per serving- they only give you a general percentage of an unknown amount! Even carefully reading the label does not guarantee you are getting what your are promised.
Q. What makes OmegaQD a better choice for my pet?
A.- Our recommended serving size is 32-37mg/kg body weight/day based on current medical research and veterinary specialistsâ recommended doses. That is at least double and triple the suggested serving size of many other veterinary fish oil products.
And, because OmegaQD is so concentrated, your pet needs only small amounts of powder daily to reach higher amounts of EPA/DHA.(1/4-1/2 teaspoon to a small dog/cat) and still have the higher quantities much less actually have much more product to give your pet per container at these higher recommended amounts.
OmegaQD has been tested free of heavy metals, mercury, PCBâs, AND salmonella and E.Coli.
OmegaQD lists exact ingredients and amounts on the label for you to easily decide what is best for your pet.
The Recommended Serving Size listed on the Label is 32-37 mg/kg/day
You can smell the freshness! If your pet does not like fish, then he/she may not readily accept this product formulated with fish oil from sardines.

Questions and Answers about Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Fish Oil Supplements:
Q. What are Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) and what do I need to know about them?
A. The two main groups of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) are Omega 6 and Omega 3. These are considered Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) because humans and other mammals cannot make these, so they need to be eaten in the diet. Generally, Omega 3s (EPA, DHA, ALA) are anti-inflammatory, and Omega 6s (LA, AA) are pro-inflammatory in the body (Omega 6, GLA, is an exception.). Most fatty acids are obtained from fish, crustaceans, and some vegetables.
Q. What are the Essential Fatty Acids (EFAâs) – Omega 3âs and Omega 6âs?
A. Omega 3âs can be obtained from Fish/Marine Oils in the form of EPA and DHA.
The Omega 3 from plant sources (such as flax seed, soy, walnuts) is in the form of ALA (Alpha-Linoleic Acid). This Omega 3, ALA, cannot be used by the body in that form. Mammals (including humans, dogs and cats) have only a small amount of the enzymes needed and convert only 5 â 10% of the ALA in plants into EPA that the body can actually use. Also, recent studies have shown that cats in particular cannot convert 18 carbon chain fatty acids, such as ALA, at all. Flaxseed, a popular nutritional supplement, is an excellent fiber source with other healthy nutritional benefits, but seems to be an inefficient way for the body to obtain the Omega 3s it can use.
Q. What are sources of Omega 3s?
A. Omega 3s are found in marine/fish and plant sources. The best source of Omega 3s is fish oil. Plant-based sources such as flaxseed contain ALA (Alpha Linoleic Acid). This Omega 3 is not used by the body in this form and must be converted to EPA. Unfortunately, the body has only small amounts of the needed enzymes and can only convert 5-10% of the ALA into the EPA the body can use. This makes obtaining Omega 3s from plants very inefficient.
Q. Most products list how much fish oil is in each serving. Is that number important? What is the difference between that Fish Oil Concentration and the Essential Fatty Acids, EPA/DHA, in each serving? How do I know how much is in the product?
A. The listed Fish Oil concentration is often listed as 1,000mg to 1,200mg per serving (capsule, or liquid âpumpâ), and refers to the amount of actual fish oil used per serving. The Essential Fatty Acids (EPA/DHA) are within that fish oil and are usually listed in the supplement facts box on the back of the label.
Q. How do I compare Omega 3 fish oil supplements and decide which one to use?
A. Here is a quick list of what to find on the label:
-Make sure the amounts of EPA and DHA are listed separately per serving.
The actual amount of the fish oil (which is often 1,000mg or 1,200mg per serving) tells you how much fish oil is used per serving to give you the EPA and DHA amounts. This fish oil amount does not help you figure out what you need. Look on the back of the label.
You want to know the specific EPA and DHA amounts in milligrams (mg) per serving. Often, there is âOther Omega 3sâ listed on the label. You would not count these to determine how much you need.
Note: A percentage amount is sometimes used. Make sure you can find the actual milligram (mg) amount of the overall fish oil per serving to make the calculation. It is sometimes not listed, which means you would not be able to determine the actual amounts of EPA or DHA in each serving size. (The FDA does not mandate that companyâs tell you exact amounts in the product.).
Also, look at the serving size amount. The each serving size may actually be 2 or 3 capsules daily or larger amounts of liquid than expected. This may be misleading at first. Read carefully.
- Make sure that the Omega 3 EPA/DHA source is fish oil. Avoid plant sources of Omega 3s, listed as ALA (Alpha Linoleic Acid), such as flaxseed oil. The body can only convert about 5-10% of that ALA into the usable Omega3, EPA.
- Look for statements that the fish oil has been third-party tested free of heavy metals and other contaminants.
- Avoid products that added or include Omega 6s, listed as LA (Linoleic Acid). The regular food diets already have mostly Omega 6s; the body needs more Omega 3s to make up for this.. If there are vegetable oils in the ingredients, they are the source of Omega 6s even if the Omega 6s are not listed in the supplement facts box.
- Check expiration dates, âuse byâ dates, and recommended storage of the product. Fish oils usually have to be refrigerated and have shorter âuse byâ dates which are often 30days after being opened.
- OUR RETURN POLICY: Can you return the product if your pet just wonât or canât eat the large capsules or oils? Most products do not offer a return for this reason.
- Is the product made in the USA? It is common that the company is actually based in another country, such as Canada or France, but is only being âdistributed byâ a company set up in the USA.
What ways can Omega 3âs and Omega 6âs be obtained in the diet?
What are the differences between Omega 3, and Omega 6 Fatty Acids?
Q. Is the Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio important?
A. Yes. Daily diets are almost exclusively Omega 6s with no Omega 3s, unless fish or fish oil has been added to the diet. Thus, there is an excess of Omega 6s. A recommended ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 in the diet is 5:1 to 10:1 (Omega 6:Omega 3) This dietary ratio helps support a less inflammatory environment in the body. Since the natural daily diet contains almost all Omega 6s, Omega 3s need to be specifically added. It is also strongly recommended that a low fat diet be fed to help offset the excess Omega 6s found in commercial foods.
Q. Is there a best source of Omega 3s?
A. A marine oil- fish oil- source of Omega 3s seems to be the most efficiently used source of EPA/DHA for the body. Marine oil/fish oil sources that can be third party tested appear to be the best. They can be verified to have the label-claim ingredients and concentrations and to be free of heavy metals and contaminants. OmegaQD gives this to you!
Q. If flaxseed has been added to my petâs diet, isnât there enough Omega 3s?
A. No.
Q. What are my options to giving my pet Fish Oil?
Before OmegaQD powder, there were only large capsules or oils that used a pump that often leaks or has an unpleasant odor. Many popular veterinary fish oil products suggest daily serving sizes much less (often only 9 -20 mg/kg body weight/day) than what many veterinarians recommend feeding your pet. This means you need to at least double or triple the labeled serving amounts of many fish oil products to reach the higher amounts every day based on current medical research or individual patient responses. This often means giving your 60# dog with arthritis 6 to 8 capsules or several mls of liquid, or giving your small dog or cat 2 or more large capsules or more than a teaspoon of liquid every day.
Q. How much Omega 3s, EPA/DHA does my pet need?
A. Your veterinarian can help you determine this amount. The current recommended daily âdosesâ of Omega 3s by many veterinary specialists seem to be based on both empirical dosages of Omega 3 EFAs, EPA/DHA used in current medical research studies and their own patientsâ clinical outcomes.
Those amounts range from:
30-40 mg/kg body weight/day (or sometimes calculated as 180mg EPA/ 5kg body weight/day) for supportive maintenance to 60-90mg/kg body weight/day for clinical use in animals with arthritis, knee injuries, other joint pain, chronic skin and ear infections, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease to 100mg and higher/kg body weight/day for cancer patients.
A. Omega 3s EPA/DHA from fish oil continue to be studied in detail by both human and animal medical researchers as a health-promoting nutritional supplement for several medical conditions.
For example, just this year, studies in the Journal of American Vertinary Medical Association (JAVMA) reported that Omega 3 supplements, when combined with a healthy diet, maintain increased activity levels and mobility while decreasing the use of arthritis pain medications in dogs.
