Fish Oil Benefits for Dogs

Meet my dog Xena (Boxer/Greyhound) 4 yrs.

Mankind has been reaping the benefits of fish oil for centuries now and now new research has shown that fish oil is extremely beneficial for not only treating diseases but also in preventing them.

The oil contained in fish is an extremely rich source of omega-3 fatty acids which has been found to be helpful in treating many conditions such as inflammation, allergies, heart problems and kidney disease. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, omega 3 oils have especially proven to be useful in treating skin problems such as excessive itching, infections and hair shedding. Apart from this, including fish as part of the diet also improves the dog’s mental health as it contains healthy brain supplements.

Fish oil can also help to ward off cancer; a killer disease that is causing the deaths of millions of dog’s every year as it contains nutrients that can help to fight off of dangerous cancer cells. Fish is also a low fat food, so the animal is not at risk of gaining as much weight from eating fish as compared to other foods such as meat. Moreover it helps to regulate the cholesterol levels in the body which reduces the risks of heart attacks. Dogs as they grown old become victims of arthritis and bone deformities and doctors say that the best way to prevent this problem is by regularly feeding them with fish food. This is because fish food contains high amounts of cartilage which is incidentally a rich source of glucosamine and chondroitin which are essential components for the well being of bones.

Fish is also high in proteins and low in sugar which means that it is easily digestible and this is especially necessary for older dogs whose digestive systems have slowed down considerably. Fish like Salmon also contain natural anti-oxidants that can help to exterminate certain kind of germs known to affect dogs. Thus as you can see fish can hugely help to boost your dog’s health and help it to live longer. So make it a point to regularly include fish in your dog food.

Nevertheless if you are living in places where fish are either expensive or are difficult to find, then it would be feasible to go for packaged fish food. You can find these at most local stores but if you wish to buy these at discounted rates, purchasing them online from dog food companies is also not a bad option.

Fish food is much more nutritious than any other dog food, so if you wish to see your pets in the pink of health, start feeding them with these foods from today itself.

How Does Fish Oil Work

To understand more about fish oil and how it can help your body you need to look at your whole body from the cellular level.  The membrane or covering of each cell in our body is made up of fatty acids including omega 3, 6, 9, and others… To have optimal cell function the ratio of omega fatty acids should be a 1 to 1 ratio of each of these omega fatty acids. Unfortunately, those of us whom consume the typical western diet high in breads, dairy, and deep-fried food have shifted our ratios to an astonishing 20 to 1 ratio.  This ratio is high in omega 6 and 9 fatty acids and very low in omega 3 fatty acids. Fish oil is loaded with omega 3 fatty acids which helps balance out our deficiency and help achieve the essential 1 to 1 ratio required to properly absorb nutrition and prevent disease.

What Happens When Our Cells Are Not In Balance?

The simple answer is your cells start to lose flexibility and function.  Our cells need to be flexible to allow waste to exit while nutrition is absorbed.  When our cells are not in balance, the membrane becomes less flexible and waste is not able to get out properly casing increased pressure inside the cell.  This build-up of waste also makes it more difficult for the cell to absorb nutrition.  Eventually, poor cell function leads to break down of the body and increased problems with health.  A body that is unhealthy is likely to battle issues like increased heart conditions, diabetes, seizures, intestinal and mental problems and the list goes on.  Help your body run at its best by adding fish oil to your diet.  Dr. Josh also recommends a balance lifestyle of exercise as well as ample amounts of rest.

Fish Oil – many health benefits for dog health
by Dr. Jeannie Thomason

Fish oil has shown positive benefits in helping pets with disease as well as preventing some health problems. In recent years, essential fatty acids, specifically, omega-3s have been among the most commonly used nutritional supplements in treating dogs (and cats). Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil have been used to treat canine allergies for some time now. However, now it is being recommend for a wide variety of conditions ranging from kidney disease to arthritis and high cholesterol. Adding fish oil to your dog’s food provides anti-inflammatory effects and can help relieve itching and scratching some allergy-related skin conditions.

Benefits of Fish Oil for Dogs & Cats

by David E. Neuwirth

There are a lot of supplements available for your pet to help with a myriad of health issues.  One commonly used supplement is fish oil; mainly because it’s a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids.  Some pet owners learn about fish oil for pets with skin or coat issues (such as dry or itchy skin, hot spots, etc.); however, dogs and cats with no known skin or coat issues will also see an improvement after using fish oil.  Your pet’s coat will become shinier and softer when supplementing their diet regularly with fish oil.  You might also find that your pet sheds less when incorporating fish oil into your pet’s regular diet.

While many people have heard about fish oil benefitting the skin and coat, there are additional benefits to supplementing your dog or cat’s diet with fish oil.  The Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil have been shown to help reduce inflammation, making it useful for pets suffering from arthritis and stiff joints, allergies and even I.B.S (inflammatory bowel disease).  Omega 3 fatty acids help regulate the immune system, lower blood pressure, improve brain function and cognitive abilities.  Research has found that Fish Oil with Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA can reduce the risk of heart problems, making fish oil ideal for pets affected by heart disease.  Pets with cancer and kidney disease can also benefit from regularly taking fish oil supplements.

There are numerous types of fish oil products for pets on the market.  Usually fish oil is administered to pets in a gel capsule or liquid form.  I’ve used both with my pets, but found the liquid to be more convenient for me.  Grizzly Salmon Oil is a good quality, all natural product that is easy to use.  Grizzly Salmon Oil only uses wild caught Alaskan Salmon.  It comes in a pump bottle so it’s easy to use.  Just pump the fish oil on your pet’s food.  A chart on the bottle tells you how many pump strokes to use based on your pet’s weight.  Grizzly Pollock Oil is another alternative with many of the same benefits as salmon oil.

For pets suffering from extreme itching and skin issues, Ark Naturals’ Omega Mender! Itch Ender! combines wild fish oil with borage oil (a natural anti-inflammatory oil with benefits for healthy skin).  This product is also in a liquid form and is administered with meals.  Omega Mender, Itch Ender (formerly known as Royal Coat Express) is made in the USA.  NaturVet’s Unscented Salmon Oil is ideal for anyone who might not like to give their pet salmon oil without any smell.  Also, some cats can be more picky about salmon oil; unscented oil might work well for finicky cats.  Regardless of which salmon oil supplement you use, make sure you read the label for proper storage instructions and feeding guidelines.

Benefits of giving your pets fish oil

I have a black cat and periodically, I have black foster cats. I notice that they look like they have dandruff sometimes. It is common in cats of all colors but it is more noticeable in black kitties. I have “cured” this dandruff by using a supplement containing fish oil, flaxseed oil and borage oil. (You can also use a supplement of only fish oil) According to the bottle, this pill contains Omega 3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA, ALA), omega 6 fatty acids (CLA, GLA, ALA), and omega 9 fatty acids (OA). Surprisingly, fish oil has many benefits for our pets.

Most commercially available fish oils are derived from coldwater fish, primarily menhaden, but also salmon and trout. Fish, in turn, obtain EPA and DHA from algae, making super green foods such as marine micro-algae an alternate source of EPA and DHA. Algae may become the dominant source of omega-3 fatty acids as fish populations continue to decline in the world’s oceans.

Fish oil supplementation may be helpful for pets with inflammatory diseases including allergies, arthritis, kidney disease, heart disease, and cancers. These oils are rich in the Omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Fish oil does not appear to raise blood sugar levels in pets with diabetes despite earlier concerns about this.

Flaxseed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA,) an omega-3 fatty acid that is ultimately converted to EPA and DHA. In fact, flax seed oil contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids (ALA) than fish oil. It also contains omega-6 fatty acids. Unlike the case for fish oil, there is little evidence that flaxseed oil is effective for any specific therapeutic purpose with the following exceptions. Flax seed oil can improve the coat and skin of pets. Also, the lignans contained in flax seed oil may have anti-cancer benefits.

In pets with some types of cancer, fish oil appears to slow down the growth of the cancer. While more studies are needed on other types of cancer, the general recommendation is to add fish oil to the diets of all pets with cancer.

Higher-end pet food brands may state on their label that their food has omega 3 fatty acids in it, often in the form of fish meal. Even if the proper fish were used to make fish meal, EPA and DHA are too fragile to survive the shelf life of commercial pet food. The only reliable source of EPA and DHA is salmon oil in capsules.

I use capsules sold for humans.  They are of the same quality (maybe better) than the pet capsules and they are much cheaper. I put one capsule in about 3 oz. of wet food (you can also put it over dry food). I give it 2 or 3 times a week. It is cheaper for me to give it only a few days a week and I still get the same result as I did when I gave it everyday. To release the oil, I poke the capsule with a safety pin or thumb tack. Be sure to rinse off the thumb tack or whatever you use. The fish oil tends to stay on it and will pool underneath it and become a sticky mess after awhile. Don’t use a pen! It won’t work after you use it.

Benefits of Fish Oil For Dogs

Fish oil for dogs may be one of the beneficial supplements that you could give ever your pet as it will help all breeds in any age group in ways that most owners may not be aware of. Owners have been using fish oil for years as a supplement for hair coats and improving the gloss in the coat, but it has benefits that far exceed just protecting your dog’s coat. There are also very few side affects of fish oil, except in very rare cases where extreme dosages may be used as it could possibly cause pancreatitis.

However, it is extremely rare and has only been documented where the dosage has been extremely high for a prolonged period of time.Fatty acids are essential for all pets, especially dogs, and the richest forms of fatty acids are found in three major sources; beef fat, sunflower oil, and fish oil. Although beef fat does contain fatty acids, it is has a very low percentage, while on the other hand sunflower oil and fish oil have much higher percentages. But even sunflower oil does not come close to the benefits of fish oil.

Dogs can produce some of the needed fatty acids, but not all of them, and as a result they must be obtained form their diet or supplemented. Fatty acids in foods are also subject to degradation, as overcooking can virtually destroy these very important nutrients and can actually cause a deficiency. Supplementing fish oil drops or supplements into your dogs diet can do wonders for your loyal companion.Benefits of Fish Oil:Allergies and Autoimmune Conditions:Most all allergies as well as autoimmune conditions are the result of your dogs body over reacting to something.

Autoimmune conditions are especially dangerous as it is your dogs own system actually attacking itself. There are two primary forms of fatty acids that your dog needs in their diets, omega-3 and omega-6. However, what is not well known is that there is a third type of fatty acid, omega-9.Omega-9 is found primarily in animal fat as well as vegetable oil, and actually decreases the concentrations of omega-3 and omega-6 in your dogs skin as well as their blood. Fish oil helps to bring the balance back into full strength and protect your dogs system against both allergies and autoimmune conditions, as most all skin conditions are caused by a lack of enough omega-3 in your dogs system.

Arthritis:The next major benefit of fish oil for dogs is that of fighting inflammation. Both forms of fatty acids are incorporated in your dogs cell membranes, and when a cell becomes damaged, the substances of omega-6 are released from the cell membranes and are metabolized by enzymes. When this occurs, it actually causes both inflammations as well as itching in your dog. However, the major substances of omega-3 are also affected, and fish oil can do wonders in correcting the situation. If your dog is battling arthritis, a few drops of fish oil or one tablet daily can be extremely helpful.

It may take four to five weeks to become fully effective, but it most all cases it helps to reduce the inflammation. Fish oil will also help other inflammatory conditions such as colitis, inflammatory bowel disorders, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is extremely effective in neutralizing the enzyme metabolism that cases this chain of events.Eyes:Omega 3 fatty acids, enriched by fish, Fish Oil Triglycerides Products,  oil, assist in developing a strong immune system but is also very effective at strengthening your dogs retina as well as their visual cortex.

Your dogs visual cortex, also known as V1, transmits information to two primary pathways essential for vision; the dorsal stream and the ventral stream. It basically aids as a lubricating tool to enhance your dog’s vision.Yeast Infections:Fish oil for dogs also helps to slow down the growth of the most common cause of yeast infections which usually attacks your dogs skin as well as their ears. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are often used for treatments of yeast infection and it only makes common sense that if they are successful in treating yeast infection, they would also be just as effective in preventing this painful infection.

Atopy:Atopy is an allergy, but it is a form of allergy that is caused by your dog inhaling substances such as mold or pollen. There is a long held theory in the medical community that fatty acid supplements become deficient in mothers that have developed atopy. Once this occurs, it will naturally affect the entire litter. Since fish oil in dogs is by far and away the most powerful form of fatty acids, it is believed to aid in releasing several of the necessary acids to help build the immune system in the battle against this type of allergy.

Heart Problems:There have been several documented cases where fatty acids high in fish oil have helped to correct and in several cases prevent ventricular arrhythmias in dogs. High blood pressure has also been reduced by utilizing fish oil for dogs. It has also been extremely effective in helping with anti-clotting effects on the platelets in dogs.Cancer:Fish oil for dogs also helps to balance the amounts of both omega-3 and omega-6 in your dogs body. This balance is critical as omega-3 is very effective at slowing both the development as well as the metastasis of cancer growth, but too much omega-6 can actually stimulate cancer growth.

Fish oil helps to hold the balance to the correct levels.Triglycerides and cholesterol:Fish oil for dogs is also extremely effective in one of the faster growing concerns for your pets overall health; high cholesterol levels. It is especially effective at reducing the levels of both triglycerides and cholesterol in your dogs blood. If your dog is undergoing any type of retinoid therapy, which is a form of synthetic vitamin A, fish oil helps to enhance the benefits and as a result, controls both the triglyceride and cholesterol levels.

I am an avid lover of pets and my wife and I have had several pets throughout our years. We are especially fond of dogs, and we have a 12 year old Dalmatian (our 3rd) and a “mutt” that we rescued when someone threw him away to die in a vacant field. He found us, nearly starved to death, and weighed about 2 pounds.
After severe bouts of mange and severe dehydration, and over 1,000.00 in veterinarian bills, we saved the little guys life, and he is one of the best, if not the best, dogs we have ever had and today is a muscular, fit, and firm 70 pound best friend.
After finishing my MBA, which at middle age was not easy, I decided to keep the research work ethics that I acquired, and devote about two hours each night in understanding the health benefits of supplementation for both humans and pets and how they might strengthen our, as well as our pets, immune system in a pre-emptive approach to health rather than a reactionary approach.
Both of my daughters are avid cat lovers, and asked me to help them with health concerns and challenges with their cats.
I am not a veterinarian nor claim to be, just a lover of pets that loves to research and pass on some knowledge that might be helpful, or at least stimulating to the thought process.
Several of the articles that I have written can be found on my website, Liquid Vitamins & Minerals for Humans & Pets – http://www.liquid-vitamins-minerals-humans-pets.com/

Benefits of Fish Oil for Dogs

Fish oil has become a popular supplement for dogs and humans alike.  A number of veterinarians recommend fish oil for dogs because it contains omega-3 fatty acids. According to experts, these acids help treat allergies in dogs and prevent kidney disease.  That is just the tip of the iceberg; several studies are being conducted to see what kind of conditions can be treated by omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil.

Perhaps the number one reason why a lot of veterinarians and owners alike recommend fish oil is that it helps maintain the health of the dogs coat and skin.  According to some studies, supplements that contain omega 3, usually in the form of fish oil, reduces itchiness and irritation of the skin due to inflammation by about 10-25% in allergic dogs.  However, the study did not use every supplement available on market, just a few.  This does not mean that only a few brands work; some supplements may have better results for some dogs. Another factor to consider before using supplements to treat a dog’s skin condition is the nature of the illness.  Some health problems, like atopic dermatitis, cannot be treated using supplements.

Another benefit of fish oil supplements is that it gives the dog a better energy source.  Omega-3, though a beneficial kind, is still fat and can be used by the body as fuel.  This type of fatty acid counter acts the negative side effects of “bad fats”.  This results to the improvement of the dog’s cardiac health.  The risk of heart diseases due to inflammation can be greatly reduced.

Since omega-3 cannot be produced naturally by the dog’s system, it has to be introduced by an external source.  The source could either come from health supplements, usually in the form of fish oil, or from certain types of food that contain omega-3.  Soybeans, walnuts and fish are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Although more expensive than the alternative, oily fishes such as sardines, mackerels and anchovies are still the best providers of essential fatty acids.  Most dogs won’t mind the taste either.
